OFF2000: Error Message: "Product Is Not Installed on This Computer" Using Custom Maintenance Wizard (242311)

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Custom Maintenance Wizard (CMW) to update an Office 2000 installation, the following error message may appear:
Product is not installed on this computer.

CAUSE

This error message may appear if you specified the wrong .msi file when you created your .cmw file with the Custom Maintenance Wizard. For example, you have Office 2000 Standard installed, but you specified Data1.msi from Office 2000 Premium when you created your .cmw file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must recreate your .cmw file by using the .msi file from the Office 2000 product you are trying to update.

The Custom Maintenance Wizard creates a .cmw file that you can use to update an existing installation of any Office 2000 product. One of the steps in the creation of the .cmw file is the selection of the .msi file for the product you are going to update. However, you cannot use the .cmw file on any Office 2000 product. You can only use it on the product associated with the selected .msi when you created the .cmw in the Custom Maintenance Wizard.

Most of the Office 2000 products use Data1.msi for the Windows Installer package. However, in the Set Feature Installation States dialog box of the Custom Maintenance Wizard, the feature tree lists only the features available in the .msi package you selected.

For example, the Custom Maintenance Wizard shows the following top-level features if you use Data1.msi from Excel 2000 or Office 2000 Standard:

Excel 2000

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows
  • Office Tools
  • Converters and Filters

Office 2000 Standard

  • Microsoft Word for Windows
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows
  • Microsoft Outlook for Windows
  • Office Tools
  • Converters and Filters
Because the list of features for the Excel 2000 version from Data1.msi is different from those listed for Office 2000 Standard, this should be the first indication you may have used the wrong .msi file.
