This article describes how to move your customized data in Microsoft Call Manager from one computer to another computer.

If you upgrade to a new computer or decide to connect your Microsoft Cordless Phone System to a different computer, you may want to save your customized settings and data, such as address book entries, messages, and greetings.

To move your Call Manager data from one computer to another computer, use the following methods.

Install Microsoft Call Manager on the New Computer

  1. Follow the instructions on the Read Me First card to set up your Microsoft Cordless Phone System hardware and to install the software on the new computer.
  2. On the File menu, click Exit Microsoft Call Manager to quit Microsoft Call Manager on each computer.
  3. Copy the files that you want to save from your old computer to a disk or a network folder. To determine which files you want to copy, see the "Saving Your Data" section later in this article.
  4. Copy the files from the disk or network folder to the appropriate folders on the new computer.
  5. Remove Microsoft Call Manager from your old computer.
NOTE: You are permitted to install Microsoft Call Manager software on only one computer. After you install Microsoft Call Manager on the new computer, you must remove the software from the other computer.

Saving Your Data

Greetings and mailboxes

Your greetings and mailboxes are stored in the Machine.tam file located in the Microsoft Call Manager installation folder. By default, Call Manager is installed in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Phone

After you install the Call Manager software on the new computer, copy the Machine.tam file from the Microsoft Phone folder on the old computer to the Microsoft Phone folder on the new computer.

NOTE: If you recorded a greeting when you installed Call Manager on the new computer, the greeting is overwritten when you copy the Machine.tam file to the new computer.

Voice messages

Voice messages are stored by Microsoft Outlook Express. Outlook Express creates two files for each Call Manager message mailbox. The voice message files have the file name extensions .idx and .mbx.

To locate the .idx and .mbx files on the old computer:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type *.idx *.mbx.
  3. In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
  4. Copy each file listed in the Find: Files Named *.idx *.mbx dialog box to the same folder on the new computer.

Address book entries

Address book entries are stored in Windows Address Book (.wab) files. If you log on to your computer, your user name is used to name the file.

For example, if your user name is "John Doe" then the address book file is named John Doe.wab. If you do not log on to your computer, the address book entries are stored in the Usermps.wab file.

To locate the .wab file on the old computer:

  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type *.wab.
  3. In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
  4. Copy the .wab file listed in the Find: Files Named *.wab dialog box to the same folder on the new computer.

    If you have multiple users on the same computer, there may be multiple .wab files.

    NOTE: It is important that you use the same user name to log on to the new computer that you used to log on to the old computer. Also, if you did not log on to the old computer, then you can only use the old .wab file if you do not log on to the new computer.

Private greetings and custom announcements

Your recordings of private greetings and custom announcements are stored in the Wabstore.tam file located in the Call Manager installation folder. By default, Call Manager is installed in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Phone

Copy the Wabstore.tam file from the Microsoft Phone folder on the old computer to the Microsoft Phone folder on the new computer.

Call History

Your Call History entries are stored in the Msp_clog.dat file, located in the Call Manager installation folder. By default, Call Manager is installed in the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Phone

Copy the Msp_clog.dat file from the Microsoft Phone folder on the old computer to the Microsoft Phone folder on the new computer.

Speed dial numbers

Speed dial numbers are stored in the Microsoft Windows system registry. To move your speed dial numbers to the new computer, export the appropriate registry key from the old computer, and then import the registry key into the registry on your new computer.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.


To export the speed dial registry key:
  1. On the old computer, click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  4. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Software.
  5. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Microsoft.
  6. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Microsoft Phone.
  7. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Line1.
  8. Click the Line1 registry key.
  9. On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
  10. Under Export range, click Selected branch.
  11. In the Save in box, click the disk drive or the network drive you are using to move the files to the new computer.
  12. In the File name box, type a name for the file, and then click Save.
  13. Quit Registry Editor.
  14. On the new computer, insert the disk or connect to the network drive containing the saved registry branch.
  15. Click Start, and then click Run.
  16. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  17. On the Registry menu, click Import Registry File.
  18. In the Look in box, click the disk drive or network drive containing the file, click the registry file, and then click Open.
  19. When you receive notification that the information has been entered into the registry, click OK.
  20. Quit Registry Editor.

TTY window shortcuts

If you use the TTY window and have created shortcuts, you can copy the shortcuts to your new computer using the steps in the "Speed dial numbers" section earlier in this article. However, instead of exporting and importing the Line1 registry key in the Microsoft Phone branch, you need to export and import the TTY registry key in the Microsoft Phone branch.
