SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes (POP3 Connector) that runs on BackOffice Small Business Server version 4.5 may not retrieve e-mail messages from one or more e-mail accounts. In addition, the following error messages may be logged in the Application event log, where x.x.x.x is the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the POP3 mail server, y.y.y.y is the IP address where the x.x.x.x IP address is resolved, and username is the name of the user for whom it is attempting to receive the e-mail message:
Event ID: 12050
Source: POP3 Connector
Category: Download
POP3: Failed to check the POP3 account for username at host x.x.x.x on port 110. The error was 10065

-and-

Event ID: 12052
Source: POP3 Connector
Category: Download
POP3: An error occurred during a POP3 transaction to host x.x.x.xy.y.y.y. For user username. The error is 10065

CAUSE

This problem can occur because Microsoft Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes has the POP3 server's IP address listed as the "POP3 Mail Server" for the Exchange recipients on the Users Mailboxes tab, in the POP3 Connector properties.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Microsoft Exchange/Microsoft Exchange Administrator.
  2. Double-click Connector for POP3 Mailboxes.
  3. In Connector Properties, look for entries that have IP addresses listed for the POP3 mail server on the Connect & Download tab in the Global ISP Mail Hosts dialog box.
  4. Look for entries that have IP addresses listed for the POP3 mail server on the User Mailboxes tab for any listed recipient.
  5. Change all POP3 mail server IP addresses to their fully qualified domain names (FQDN) by using the Edit button on the appropriate tab.
  6. Click OK, and then click Services in Control Panel to stop and start Microsoft Exchange Connector for POP3 Mailboxes.
