PRB: Update a Network Driver That Requires the Intel NET557.INF File (242150)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q242150

SYMPTOMS

When updating a networking device driver under Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition the updated files are not copied.

CAUSE

This is a known problem with Net557.inf only.

RESOLUTION

After first noting and recording the network configuration, remove the network card completely using either the Network Control Panel application or the System Device Manager. Reboot the computer and use the newly supplied Intel .inf file to identify the device during Plug and Play installation.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Open the My Computer Properties page.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Under Network Adapters select the NIC and click Properties.
  4. Click the Driver tab and select Update Driver.
  5. Select the proper path.
You must have an installation disk with the new files. Windows 98 SE appears to do everything required by the .inf file except the CopyFiles section. No files are copied. If the newer driver has a new name, then Windows 98 SE attempts to load the driver by the new name but gets a device load error because the file is not present.
