The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Site Server 3.0
  • Microsoft Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition

This article was previously published under Q242073
Note: The information in this article was originally included in the Site Server 3.0 Service Pack 2 Readme_sp2.htm file.

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to stop the broker from the command line (by using the NET STOP BROKSVC command) while the broker is querying the LDAP server, the following error message occurs:
The broksvc could not be stopped.
However, the broker does stop after its refresh has completed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, wait until the refresh has completed to stop and restart the broker.

MORE INFORMATION

When you attempt to restart the broker from the command line after you use the NET STOP BROKSVC command (but before the refresh is complete), the error message also occurs. When you attempt to restart the broker after the refresh completes, the error message does not occur and the command succeeds.

This issue only occurs when the broker is connected to a directory with a large number of groups. Usually, the broker refreshes quickly, but with a large number of groups, the refresh time can be significant.
