SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to use the Infrared Recipient tool, you may receive the following error message:
Communications could not be initialized. Make sure Infrared is enabled on your machine through the Infrared Control Panel applet.
Also, this behavior may occur even though you have verified that your infrared functionality is properly enabled.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you are using a computer where the operating system was installed by using a Preptool utility disk image.
RESOLUTIONWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
To prevent this problem from occurring, perform the following steps before running Preptool:
- Use Registry Editor to view the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2\Parameters\Protocol_Catalog9
Export the Protocol_Catalog9 key to a Registry (.reg) file. - Restart your computer. You can now include the exported registry file in the ADDREG section of the Msbatch.inf file for the Preptool utility to provide infrared configuration information.
To work around this issue without using the Preptool utility:
- Use Registry Editor to view the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2\Parameters\Protocol_Catalog9
Export the Protocol_Catalog9 key to a Registry (.reg) file. - Copy the exported registry file to the other computer.
- Double-click the .reg file, and then click OK to import the infrared configuration settings to that computer.
