IntelliPoint: PS/2 Pointing Device Stops Working When You Change Driver (239678)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Mouse tool in Control Panel to change the driver for a Microsoft PS/2 pointing device, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
  • The pointing device no longer works.
  • The IntelliPoint (mouse) icon in the taskbar disappears.
  • When you use the keyboard to switch to the Buttons tab in the Mouse Properties dialog box, you receive an "out of memory" error message.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You run the IntelliPoint software on a Microsoft Windows 95-based computer.
  • You changed the mouse driver to the Microsoft Serial IntelliMouse (IntelliPoint) driver or the Microsoft Serial IntelliMouse Trackball (IntelliPoint) driver.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restore the original driver for the PS/2 pointing device, and then restart the computer.

To do this:
  1. Press CTRL+ESC to view the Start menu in Microsoft Windows 95.
  2. Press the S key, and then press the C key to open Control Panel.
  3. Use the ARROW keys on the keyboard to select the Mouse icon, and then press ENTER.
  4. Press the TAB key until Activities is selected, and then press the RIGHT ARROW key until the General tab is displayed.
  5. On the General tab, press the TAB key to select the Change button, and then press ENTER.
  6. Press ALT+A to select the Show all devices option.
  7. Press TAB to move to the Manufacturers box.
  8. In the Manufacturers box, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft.
  9. Press TAB to move to the Models box.
  10. In the Models box, use the ARROW keys to select the correct IntelliPoint driver for your Microsoft PS/2 pointing device.NOTE: If you are not sure which driver is correct, select Microsoft PS/2 Mouse (IntelliPoint) if you have a standard mouse, or select Microsoft PS/2 Mouse with Wheel (IntelliPoint) if you have a wheel mouse or a trackball.

  11. Press ENTER, and then press ENTER again.
  12. When you are prompted to restart the computer, press ENTER.
