This article describes how to configure a Macintosh client computer to use file and print sharing with Small Business Server.

Small Business Server supports Macintosh client connectivity for file and print sharing, Exchange e-mail and proxy services.

You must install and configure Services for Macintosh (SFM), which are included with Small Business Server, for basic file and print sharing on the Macintosh client. SFM installs the Appletalk protocol by default.

Installing and Configuring Services for Macintosh

To install and configure SFM for file and print services, follow these steps on the server.
  1. Right-click Network Neighborhood.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. On the Services tab, click Add.
  4. Click Services for Macintosh, and then click OK.
  5. Insert the Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server Disk 1 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and verify that the path points to the I386 folder on the CD-ROM drive, and then click Continue.
  6. When the files are finished copying, click OK, click Close, and then verify the binding information displayed on the screen.
  7. In the Appletalk Protocol Properties dialog box, click OK.
  8. When you are prompted to restart the server, click Yes.
  9. Verify that the Microsoft UAM Volume did get created.NOTE: The Microsoft UAM Volume is for logon purposes only. You must create Mac accessible volumes for file storage.

  10. Reinstall any Windows NT 4.0 Service Packs (Service Pack 4 or later).
  11. Create folders on any NTFS volume for the Macintosh clients to store files.
  12. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Server Manager.
  13. Click Mac File, click the volumes you want, and then click Create Volume.
  14. In the Volume Name box, type the volume name you want.
  15. Type the path and folder name of the shared folder you created.
  16. Verify that you can connect to the volumes before you make any other changes. Click OK.
  17. Verify the new volume exists in the list, and then click Close.
NOTE: After you install Services for Macintosh, File Manager provides an easy interface for configuring Macintosh file shares. To open File Manager, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools(Common), and then click File Manager. You can use the commands that are added to the toolbar or in the MacFile menu.

Logging On the Network Using a Macintosh Client

To log on the network using a Macintosh client, follow these steps:
  1. Connect the Macintosh computer to the network.
  2. On the Macintosh computer, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  3. Point to Control Panels, and then click Appletalk.
  4. In the Connect via box, click Ethernet.
  5. Close the Appletalk window.
  6. Click the Apple icon, and then click Chooser.
  7. Verify that Appletalk is Active.
  8. Click AppleShare.
  9. In the Select a File Server list, click the Small Business Server you want, and then click OK.

  11. Click OK.
  12. Click Registerd User. NOTE: You must enable the Small Business Server guest account to use the guest logon.
  13. Type a valid user name and password for the network.
  14. Click OK.
  15. Click the volumes you created to be mounted and mark the volumes to automatically remount on logon if you want.
  16. Click OK.
  17. Close the Chooser.

Printing to Shared Small Business Server Printers Using the Macintosh

Any printer you install and share on the Small Business Server is available to the Macintosh client computer as a Mac compatible postscript printer. To gain access to the shared printer, follow these steps:
  1. On the Macintosh computer, click the Apple icon, and then click Chooser.
  2. Click the LaserWriter8 printer driver icon.
  3. In the Select a Postscript Printer box, click printer you want.NOTE: The Macintosh cannot print using the Fax printer.
  4. Click Setup, and then click Auto Setup.NOTE: You may need to configure the Postscript Printer Description (PPD) file for optimum performance of your printer.
  5. Click OK, and then close the Chooser window.
  6. If you receive notification that you have changed your current printer, click OK.

Configuring Internet Explorer 4.01 for Proxy

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
  3. In the option list on the left, expand Network, and then click Proxies.
  4. Click Enabled, and then click All in the Protocols box.
  5. In the Method box, click Normal.
  6. In the Address http:// box, type the Small Business Server IP address, and then type 80 in the Port box.
  7. Type the user name and password for the user who is using this copy of Internet Explorer on the proxy server.
  8. In the box that allows you to list the sites to which you want to connect, type local.
  9. Click OK. NOTE: For Small Business Server 2000, type 8080 in the Port box.

Configuring Microsoft Outlook for the Macintosh to Use the SBS Exchange Server

  1. Open the Microsoft Outlook Folder on the hard disk.
  2. Open the Outlook Setting program.
  3. On the MS Exchange Settings Properties dialog box, verify the Microsoft Exchange Server and Personal Address Book are set up in the profile.
  4. With the Microsoft Exchange Server selected click Properties.
  5. Type the Small Business Server name for the Microsoft Exchange Server name.
  6. Type the users e-mail alias for the Mailbox. (The user name should be the same as the logon name.)
  7. On the Connection option, click Appletalk.
  8. On the When Starting option, click Connect with the network.
  9. Click Check Name to validate the user to the mailbox.
  10. Click OK, click OK, and then click Close.
  11. Open Microsoft Outlook.
  12. Create and send a test message to yourself to verify you can send and receive e-mail messages.

Configuring Netscape Navigator 3.01 for Proxy

  1. Open Netscaper Navigator.
  2. On the Options menu, click Network Preferences.
  3. On the Proxies tab, click Manual Proxy Configuration, and then click View.
  4. Type the Small Business Server IP address in all of the Proxy address boxes.
  5. Type 80 in all of the Port boxes.
  6. In the No proxy on box, type local, click OK, and then click OK.NOTE: For Small Business Server 2000, type 8080 in the Port box.
