Works 2000: Keyboard Command Does Not Insert Special Character (239380)

SYMPTOMS

The Use keyboard commands to insert a symbol or special character topic in Microsoft Works 2000 online Help lists incorrect keyboard commands to insert the following special characters.

To insertPress
DegreesALT+1076 (on the numeric keypad)
SquaredALT+1078 (on the numeric keypad)
CubedALT+1079 (on the numeric keypad)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the keyboard commands that are listed in the following table to insert the special characters.

To insertPress
DegreesALT+0176 (on the numeric keypad)
SquaredALT+0178 (on the numeric keypad)
CubedALT+0179 (on the numeric keypad)

To work around this issue, insert the special character without using a keyboard command:
  1. In the Works 2000 Word Processor, place the insertion point where you want to insert the special character.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Special Character.
  3. Click the Special Character tab.
  4. Under Character, click the special character that you want to insert, and then click Insert.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Works 2000.

You can use these special characters and symbols in any Microsoft Windows-based program. To gain access to these special characters and symbols:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Character Map.
  2. In the Font box, click the font that you want to use.
  3. Click the character that you want to insert.
  4. Click Select, and then click Copy.
  5. Open the document or file in which you want to insert the character, and then place the insertion point where you want to insert the character.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
