Works 2000: Special Characters Do Not Appear As You Expect (239361)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 2000

This article was previously published under Q239361

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Zapf Chancery or the Zapf Dingbats font in a Microsoft Works 2000 Word Processor document, special characters may not appear as expected in the document.

For example, if you insert a symbol, the symbol is displayed correctly on the character map, but may appear as a Times New Roman character when you insert the symbol into the document.

NOTE: On a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer, a symbol may be displayed as an Arial character on the character map, but the symbol appears correctly when you insert it into the document.

CAUSE

The Zapf Dingbats and Zapf Chancery fonts are both printer fonts which are installed when you install certain Hewlett-Packard printer drivers, such as the driver for the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 4Si printer.

If the printer driver is missing or damaged, the behavior described in the "Symptoms" section of this article may occur.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, reinstall the Hewlett-Packard printer driver. If you are no longer using the printer, then delete the fonts.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Works 2000.
