OFF97: Installation Error After Applying Spanish SR-2 Patch to Administrative Installation (238969)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q238969

SYMPTOMS

If you update an administrative installation of Microsoft Office 97, Spanish version, with the Spanish Office 97 SR-2 patch and then run a workstation Setup on a Windows 95 computer, the following error messages appear at the end of the Setup:
"No se pudo registrar ESCONF.DLL" (Unable to register esconf.dll))

-and-

"La instalacion no termino satisfactoriamente" (Setup was not completed successfully)

CAUSE

The Spanish Office SR-2 patch does not update the Setup.inf file correctly with regard to some DLLs located in subfolders of the Office\WMS folder. The entries for the Windows 95 versions of these DLLS point to the WINNT subfolder of Office\WMS rather than the Win95 subfolder after applying the patch to an administrative installation. This leads to the error messages during the workstation Setup.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You must install Office 97 SR-1 before installing Office 97 SR-2.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Perform an administrative installation of Spanish Office 97 SR-1 on a server.
  2. Apply the Spanish SR-2 patch to this installation.
  3. Perform a workstation installation of this installation to a Windows 95 computer.
