CDSETUP-How To Build Floppy Disk Sets for Select on Windows and Macintosh (238898)

This article was previously published under Q238898

SUMMARY

Microsoft Select is a simple volume software licensing program designed to help reduce your total cost of software ownership while making it easier to acquire licenses for Microsoft® products on an ongoing basis. Disk sets can be built for all Select products with the exception of exculsive CD-ROM releases.

MORE INFORMATION

  • Use clean pre-formatted disks to build disk sets. There should not be any files on the disks before the Microsoft product is copied to them.
  • For some PC products, the 5.25-inch high-density (1.2 MB) disk format is included on the CD-ROM. The 1.2 MB disk format allows the use of either 3.5 (1.44 MB) disks or 5.25 (1.2 MB) disks to build disk sets.

MORE INFORMATION

With the exception of the Setup disk (Disk 1), many application disks use Distributed Media Format (DMF).
  • DMF increases the capacity of a 3.5 floppy.
  • Norton DiskDoctor, Microsoft Scandisk, MS-DOS DiskCopy and Windows Copy Disk do not recognize DMF. Do not use disk utilities to examine DMF formatted disks, as the utilities can corrupt the DMF disk.
  • You cannot copy DMF formatted disks using DiskCopy.
  • Disk sets for products with the 1.44 MD/DMF format:
    • Can only be created directly from the Select CD. Disks cannot be copied from one disk to another.
    • Cannot be created on machines with 2.88 MB floppy disks.
    • Can be used on machines with 2.88 MB floppy disks.
    • Can be created on Windows NT 3.51 and Windows NT 4.0 machines.
    • Can be used on Windows NT machines.
