XADM: Exchange 2000 Server Setup Doesn't Work When You Try to Join an Exchange Server 5.5 Site on an Upgraded Windows 2000 Domain Controller (238541)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q238541

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Setup on a member server in a Windows 2000 domain, Setup may not work if the Windows 2000 domain controller was upgraded from Windows NT 4.0 and has Exchange Server 5.5 installed on it. Setup does not work when you try to join the existing Exchange Server 5.5 site.

You may encounter this error when you try to install Exchange 2000 into the 5.5 site:

The directory service is not the expected type Windows 2000 instead of Exchange 5.5.

CAUSE

Exchange Server 5.5 and the Windows 2000 domain controller are both trying to use port 389 for LDAP access.

RESOLUTION

A pre-requisite of running Exchange Server 5.5 on a Windows 2000 domain controller is that you have to change the Exchange LDAP port number. This is done through the Exchange Server Administrator program under the protocols section. Change the Exchange LDAP port number before you upgrade Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
