Temporary Folders Must Pre-Exist If Per-Session Temporary Folders Are Disabled (238362)

SYMPTOMS

By default, a Windows 2000-based server with Terminal Services enabled creates a unique temporary folder for each user as the user logs on. These folders are located under the %TEMP% and %TMP% system environment variables. The folders' names are based on the hexadecimal value of each user's session ID.

However, if per-session temporary folders have been disabled in the Terminal Services Configuration tool and a user's TEMP and TMP environment variables have been configured to point to another location (such as %HOMEDRIVE%\%HOMEPATH%\Temp and %HOMEDRIVE%\%HOMEPATH%\Tmp), the folders must exist before the user connects with the Terminal Services client to avoid problems. These folders are not created automatically.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
