FIX: Calculated Members Based on User Defined or MS Excel/VBA Functions Do Not Work when Accessed from Excel and Pivot Table Controls (238306)

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next SQL Server service pack that contains this hotfix.

The workaround is as follows:

1. If a new application is being developed, then this problem can be avoided by executing the queries synchronously or writing the user-defined functions as free-threaded.
2. If Excel or Office Web components are used to access data, then equivalent MDX expressions (if available) can be used instead of the user-defined, Excel, or VBA functions.
