Canceling Domain Controller Promotion Operation Changes Domain Membership (238110)

SYMPTOMS

When you cancel an attempt to promote a Windows 2000-based server from a workgroup to a domain using the Dcpromo.exe tool, the domain membership settings for the new domain are applied to the server. No error messages are displayed, and no events are logged in the system log. In this state, you are unable to perform tasks that can only be accessed with local or domain Administrator credentials, such as manipulating licenses using the Microsoft License Manager (Llsmgr.exe) tool.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, manually reconfigure the settings back to the workgroup:
  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Network Identification tab, click Properties.
  3. In the Member of box, click Workgroup, and then type the workgroup name.
  4. Restart the server for the changes to take effect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not affect the first server being promoted into a new domain, because the new domain does not exist until the process completes successfully. This problem only occurs when you promote the second and subsequent servers into the domain anytime after the Domain Name System (DNS) settings are set in Windows.
