Encarta World English Dictionary 2000: Pronunciations Are Not Played or You Receive Error Message (238040)

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to play a pronunciation in Microsoft Encarta World English Dictionary 2000, the pronunciation may not be played. In addition, you may receive the following error message:
An invalid media type was specified.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions is true:

  • The Msgsm32.acm file is missing or damaged.

  • The Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio Codec is not installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  4. In the list of components, click Multimedia, and then click Details.

    NOTE: Do not click the Multimedia check box.
  5. Click to select the Audio Compression check box, and then click OK.
  6. Click Have Disk.
  7. In the Copy manufacturer's files from box, click your CD-ROM drive.
  8. Insert the Microsoft Windows CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then click OK.
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the audio compression components.
  10. Close Control Panel.
