SYMPTOMS

When you open an article in Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2000, the text of the article title may be displayed with jagged edges.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if an outdated video driver is installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact your hardware manufacturer to inquire if an updated video driver is available for your video adapter.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2000.

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Disable Font Smoothing

To disable font smoothing:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. Click the Effects tab.
  4. Under Visual effects, click to clear the Smooth edges of screen fonts check box.
  5. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.

Reduce Graphics Hardware Acceleration

To reduce graphics hardware acceleration:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System.
  3. On the Performance tab, click Graphics.
  4. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider until it is one notch to the right of None (the Basic acceleration setting).
  5. Click OK, and then click Close.
  6. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
