OL98: Error in Riched20.dll When Starting Outlook (236380)

SYMPTOMS

When you start Outlook, you receive the following error message:
Outlook caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Riched20.dll

CAUSE

The first message in your Inbox contains content that cannot be displayed in the Preview Pane.

RESOLUTION

Start Outlook with the Preview Pane deactivated, and then move the message to a different location.

MORE INFORMATION

To deactivate the Preview Pane, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type "Outlook /nopreview" (without the quotes).
Outlook starts with the Preview Pane deactivated. You can now move the offending message from the initial position in the Inbox to another folder.

NOTE: A problem message may be in the top or bottom position in the Inbox, depending on whether the contents are sorted in Ascending or Descending order.
