The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95 7.0a

SYMPTOMS

When you save a Microsoft Word 2000 document as a Word 6.0/95 file, you may receive the following error message:
There was an error saving the file.
When you click OK, you receive the following error message:
There was insufficient memory or disk space. Close extra windows and try again.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if graphics are converted to PICT (for the Macintosh) or Windows Metafile (WMF) format. Microsoft Word 2000 compresses graphics, but when you save a document as a Word 6.0/95 file, graphics cannot be compressed. When you convert the file, the size of the file is increased.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, break up the Word document into smaller files. This also includes reducing the size or resolution of any graphic files in the document before you save the document as a Word 6.0/95 file.

To break up a Word document into smaller files, follow these steps:
  1. In your document, select five or six pages of text.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Cut.
  3. On the File menu, click New. Select Blank Document, and then click OK.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste.
  5. On the File menu, click Save As, and name your document "Yourdoc2" and click OK.
  6. Repeat steps 1-5 until the entire document has been pasted into separate, smaller files.
