SYMPTOMS

When you start one of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Microsoft Outlook Express 5 is missing or broken.

-or-

Microsoft Outlook Express 5.5 is missing or broken.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Outlook Express is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the methods listed below.

Download and Install the Latest Version of Internet Explorer

Download and install the latest version of Internet Explorer. For information about obtaining and installing Internet Explorer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Install Internet Explorer 5 from CD-ROM or Add/Remove Programs

To install Internet Explorer 5 from CD-ROM or from Add/Remove Programs, use the appropriate method for your version of Windows.

Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

  1. Quit all running programs.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Click the Windows Setup tab.
  5. In the Components box, click to select the Outlook Express check box.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. When Setup is finished, click OK.
  8. Close Control Panel.

Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Quit all running programs.
  2. Insert the installation CD-ROM for your Greetings, Home Publishing, or Picture It! product into the CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM so Setup does not start automatically.
  3. Click Start, and then click Run.
  4. In the Open box, type the line below that is appropriate for your product:

    cdrom:\MHP\Redist\IE5\Ie5setup.exe

    where cdrom is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive that contains the Greetings, Home Publishing, or Picture It! CD-ROM.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall Internet Explorer 5 and Outlook Express 5.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
