AOL Setup Error Messages in Windows 98 Second Edition (235704)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install America Online (AOL) from the Windows 98 Second Edition Online Services folder, you may receive one of the following error messages:
  • Error Starting Program
    A required .DLL file, SUPERSUB.DLL was not found.
    Your MAIN.IDX file is damaged. If this problem persists, you may need to reinstall the America Online software. For more information, go to Keyword: help and refer to MAIN.IDX in the Error Messages section.
    An image on the upcoming window could not be displayed correctly due to low memory. For best results, try closing unused windows.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you try to start America Online Setup from the Online Services folder after previously canceling America Online Setup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, start America Online Setup from the Win98\OLS\AOL folder on the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM:
  1. Insert the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.
  3. Use Windows Explorer to open the Win98\OLS\AOL\AOL40US folder on the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM, and then start Setup.

    NOTE: There are also folders for Canada (AOLCA) and United Kingdom (AOLUK).
