You receive "Internal Error 2344" and "Installer ended prematurely because of an error" error messages when you run Office 2000 Setup (235662)

This article was previously published under Q235662 SYMPTOMS When you run Setup, or you click Detect and Repair on the Help menu, you may receive the following error messages:
Internal Error 2344: Please contact product support for
assistance. Installer ended prematurely because of an
error. CAUSE This problem may occur if the Imagehlp.dll file is missing
from your computer. The file may be missing if one of the following is true:
- You removed McAfee VirusScan 4.0.2 from your computer. The
removal program for VirusScan can remove the Imagehlp.dll file.
-or- - You upgraded to a version of McAfee VirusScan that is later
than 4.0.2. The upgrade program for VirusScan can remove the Imagehlp.dll
file.
RESOLUTION To correct this problem, use one of the following methods. Method 1: Use Extract.exe- Open Microsoft Windows Explorer. Copy the Extract.exe file
from the System folder of your Microsoft Office CD1 to the Desktop folder on
your computer.
- Do one of the following:
- If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft
Windows 98, click Start, click Run, type command, and then press
ENTER.
-or- - If you are using Microsoft Windows NT, Microsoft
Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press
ENTER.
- At the command prompt, type the appropriate command for
your operating system, and then press ENTER.
In Windows 95 or Windows
98, type the following
extract d:\ie5\en\setupw95.cab imagehlp.dll /L c:\windows\system where d is your CD-ROM drive or
DVD-ROM drive, and windows is the folder where
Windows is installed.
In Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP,
type the following
extract d:\ie5\en\setupw95.cab imagehlp.dll /L c:\windows\system32 where d is your CD-ROM drive or
DVD-ROM drive, and windows is the folder where
Windows is installed. - After the file is extracted, close the MS-DOS Prompt
window.
When you run Microsoft Office Setup, the problem should not
occur. Method 2: Use System File Checker (Windows 98 Only)- Click Start, point to Programs, and then point to Accessories.
- Point to System Tools, and then click System Information.
- On the Tools menu, click System File Checker.
- In the Select an option and click Start
option group, click Extract one file from installation
disk.
- In the Specify the system file you would like to
restore box, type the following:
- Click Start.
- In the Restore from box, type the
following where CDRomDriveLetter is the letter
of the drive where the Office CD1 is located.
- In the Save file in box, type the
following
DriveLetter:\Windows\System where DriveLetter is the letter of the
drive where Windows is installed. - If you are prompted to create a backup folder for the file
that is being replaced, click OK to accept the default path for the backup folder. If you are
prompted to create the folder, click Yes.
- After the file is extracted, you receive the following
message:
The file has been successfully extracted.
Click OK, and then click Close.
When you run Microsoft Office Setup, the problem should not
