Windows Media Servers Send Multicast Data with No Program Started (235593)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Services 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server NetShow Services 3.0

This article was previously published under Q235593

SUMMARY

When a station, program, and stream are configured on a Windows Media Server, multicast traffic may come from the server even when the program has not been started. This allows clients that tune in early to a multicast to go into the waiting state, and automatically activate when the program for that multicast station is started.

MORE INFORMATION

This is a heart-beat packet that the server sends out every two seconds when you have a station configured. The packet size of the heart beat is only about 50 bytes and should not cause any server or network load. If you do not want to have this packet come from the server, delete the multicast station.
