  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.1

This article was previously published under Q235338

SYMPTOMS

If you start Windows Media Player when it is embedded in a Web page, you may receive a general protection (GP) fault error message in module Tapi.dll.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have a modem physically installed in your computer that has been detected by Windows but does not have installed modem drivers. When Windows Media Player starts, it attempts to make a connection to the modem but cannot. You may also have a modem installed in Windows but not physically installed in the computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install modem drivers for your modem or remove the modem from your configuration.

NOTE: If you have a modem physically installed that you are not currently using, contact your modem manufacturer for instructions on removing the modem from your computer.

To install your modem drivers:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. On the Device Manager tab, double-click the Modems branch to expand it, and then double click the modem.
  3. Click the Driver tab, click Update Driver, and then follow the instructions on the screen for updating the modem driver.
To remove a modem from Windows if you do not have a modem physically installed:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Modems.
  2. On the General tab, click the installed modem, click Remove, and then click Close.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Media Services version 4.0.
