Computer Hangs When Viewing Empty ORB Removable Drive in Japanese Windows 98 (234697)

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to view the contents of an ORB removable IDE drive when there is no disk in the drive, the computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you are running the Japanese-language version of Windows 98 (original release). This problem does not occur in other language versions of Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Windows 98.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition.
