SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to hot dock or undock an IBM ThinkPad 770 series laptop, you may receive an error message that says the hardware profile cannot be changed. In most cases, the computer's primary IDE controller is listed in the error message as the device that is preventing the computer from being docked or undocked.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you configure both docked and undocked profiles in Microsoft Windows 95, and then you upgrade to Windows 98 or Windows 98 Second Edition.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To resolve this issue, delete the 71118086 binary value in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\PCI
