Microsoft Comic Chat upgrade overwrites customized characters (232459)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Microsoft Chat from the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, you may overwrite custom comic characters that use color with standard black and white comic characters.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if your custom character files use the same names as the files that Chat installs.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, copy the \Program Files\MS Chat\Comic Art folder to a temporary location prior to the upgrade. After the upgrade is complete, restore the Comic Art folder to the original location.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
