In the Active Directory Sites and Services administrative tool, the Active Directory replication schedule does not specify how often pending changes are replicated. Instead, this period is controlled by the registry. This article describes the function of the default replication schedule.

By default, when a domain controller accepts a change, Active Directory replication partners are notified within five minutes of the change and each partner makes a request of the source domain controller to replicate the change. However, the schedule established for the intra-site connection object depicts the default replication schedule. If you have not modified the default value of this object, the schedule states that replication occurs once an hour, even though no changes are pending (which is unlikely in most situations). In addition to redundancy, this allows the Knowledge Consistency Checker to verify that the replication partner is indeed still available and working. If the remote computer went down undetected, the timely propagation of changes could be severely affected.
