The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q232116

SYMPTOMS

When you create a document in Microsoft Word 98, and then you save the document as a Word 6.0/95 document type, the document still has the Word 97-98 document type and icon.

Also, if you are using Microsoft Word 6, when you double-click the document icon, the document does not open. However, when you open the document by clicking the Open command on the File menu, the document opens correctly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs only if the document is initially saved in Word 98 and then saved again, using the same name, as a Word 6.0/95 document. This occurs because of a problem with the Word 6.0/95 file converter.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem, use the appropriate following steps:
  • Save the document, using a new name, as a Word 6.0/95 document. This will change the icon and the document kind to Word 6.0/95.

    -or-
  • If you are using Word 6, and you find that when you double click the document, the document does not open, use the Open command on the File menu, to open the document correctly.

    -or-
  • If you are using Word 6, and you want to convert these documents, you can install the Word 97-98-2000 Converter.

With the Microsoft Word 97-98-2000 Import Converter, users of Microsoft Word 5.1 or Word 6.x for the Macintosh can open documents created in Word 97 for Windows. This converter will also make it possible for Word 5.1 or Word 6.x users to open documents created in Word 98 for the Macintosh.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2001 Macintosh Edition.
