SUMMARY

When you install the Remote Installation service (RIS), one part of the Setup process is to run Risetup.exe to set up and configure the service. The volume or drive used to hold these images is determined during this phase. This article describes how to move the images to a different volume at a later time.

There are two methods to accomplish this task.

Method 1

  1. Uninstall RIS using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
  2. Stop sharing the RemoteInstall folder.
  3. Use the XCOPY command to copy the RemoteInstall directory tree to the new volume.
  4. Reinstall RIS.
  5. Run the "risetup -check" command.
Note that the "risetup -check" command may prompt you for a CD-ROM from which to copy a new image. Give the new image a temporary name and then remove it when finished. The "risetup -check" command restarts all the services for you.

Method 2

This method does not require a new image to be installed and does not require any reboots.
  1. Stop the following services: NetPC Boot Service Manager (binlsvc) and Trivial FTP Daemon (TFTPD).
  2. Stop sharing the RemoteInstall folder.
  3. Use the XCOPY command to copy the RemoteInstall directory tree to the new volume.
  4. Share the RemoteInstall folder on the new volume as Reminst.
  5. Run the "risetup -check" command.
When you are finished, boot a client to determine if it can connect and install an image. If the client generates an error message trying to connect to the server, check the following registry location to make sure the Trivial FTP Daemon is pointing to the new volume:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tftpd\parameters\Directory

If the client cannot connect, you may receive an error message similar to:

PXE-T01: File not found
PXE-E3B: TFTP Error - File not Found
