PRB: Cannot Administer SP1 OLAP Server from RTM OLAP Manager or DSO (232021)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft SQL Server OLAP Services 7.0
This article was previously published under Q232021 SYMPTOMS
An OLAP Server with Service Pack 1 (SP1) applied cannot be registered or administered from the release to manufacturing (RTM), pre-SP1 version of OLAP Manager or Decision Support Object (DSO) script (that uses the RTM version of DSO). It fails with one of the following error messages:
-2147221455 : Cannot retrieve the repository information from the server <servername>
-or-
Connection to Server Failed
Errors occurred while connecting to <servername>.
Cannot retrieve the repository information from the server <servername>.
Do you still want to register this server?
CAUSE
Service Pack 1 supports a new security model, which the RTM OLAP server does not support, and there is no way to convert old security definitions to new security definitions.
MORE INFORMATION
You can still use the same versions of OLAP Services clients that you used with the RTM OLAP server to connect to the SP1 OLAP server. These clients include ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) and ADO MD, Excel, Office Web Components, and third party front end tools.
Also please note that you can successfully administer a RTM server from SP1 OLAP Manager or DSO script.
