SUMMARY

This article describes how a network administrator can use a registry key to synchronize the Windows 95/98, Windows Millennium Edition (Me) and Windows NT domain passwords.

Normally, you must use the Passwords tool in Control Panel to change your Windows password after you specify a new domain password at the logon prompt.

You can also use the Passwords tool to synchronize passwords by selecting the Microsoft Networking check box on the Change Passwords tab in the Passwords tool in Control Panel.

You can make this modification directly in the registry by adding a new binary value named UseMasterKey to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\PwdProvider\MSNP32

A value of 00 00 00 00 clears the check box.
A value of 00 00 00 01 selects the check box.

To synchronize the Windows 95/98 or Windows Me password with the screen saver password, add a binary value named UseMasterKey to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\PwdProvider\SCRSAVE

A value of 00 00 00 00 clears the check box.
A value of 00 00 00 01 selects the check box.
