FP2000: File Is Not Checked in When You Close it (229559)

The information in this article applies to:

  • FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions from Microsoft

This article was previously published under Q229559

SYMPTOMS

When a user checks out a document using the Microsoft FrontPage 2000 built-in version control, the document remains checked out until the user checks it in, even after the file is closed. In addition, a Web administrator cannot check the document back in for the user.

CAUSE

This is by design. The Microsoft FrontPage 2000 built-in version control is designed to be a light-weight versioning solution.

For more advanced features that require an external program, consider using Microsoft's Visual SourceSafe (VSS).

WORKAROUND

To manually check in a file from the Web server, do the following:
  1. Log on locally at the Web server as an administrator.
  2. Using Windows NT Explorer, locate the folder containing the document that has been checked out.
  3. Open the "_vti_cnf" subfolder of this folder.
  4. Locate the document by the same name as the document that has been checked out and open it using Notepad.
  5. Locate the following three lines and delete them:

    • vti_sourcecontrolmultiuserchkoutby:
    • vti_sourcecontrolcheckedoutby:
    • vti_sourcecontroltimecheckedout:
Save the file and close Notepad.Refresh the Web if it is open in FrontPage.
