WD2000: Error Message When You Attempt to Edit an HTML Document (228568)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to edit an HTML document, you may receive the following error message:
Windows cannot find Winword.exe.

CAUSE

When you install Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Word is the program that is automatically registered to open HTML files for editing purposes (edit actions). If you then remove Office, Word is still registered for HTML editing.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  3. On the Programs tab, in the HTML editor list box, click the program that you want to use to edit HTML documents.
  4. Click OK.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
