Joystick Does Not Work After Upgrading to Windows 2000 (228049)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
This article was previously published under Q228049 SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 98/95-based or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based computer to Windows 2000 Professional, your joystick does
not work.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because of changes in the way Windows 2000
provides joystick and game controller support. For joystick and game controller support, Windows 95 and Windows 98 use a Virtual Device Driver (.vxd) mini-driver model, and Windows NT 4.0 uses a monolithic single joystick Dynamic Link Library (.dll) and system driver (.sys) model.
In Windows 2000, all joysticks are supported as Human Interface
Devices (HID). Because of this change to the driver model, previously installed drivers for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0 joystick and game controller support do not work in Windows 2000.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, reinstall your joystick:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, click Game Controllers, and then click Add.
- Click the appropriate joystick type, click OK and then click OK.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
