DontDisplayLastUserName Setting Lost Upgrading from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 (227458)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Windows NT Server version 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server, the Winlogon DontDisplayLastUserName value is overwritten from a value of 1 to 0. The following registry entry is not maintained:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Value: DontDisplayLastUserName
Type: REG_SZ
Default: 0 : Displays last user name
Other: 1 : Does not display last user name

CAUSE

When you upgrade to Windows 2000 Server with Terminal Server Services selected, the Terminal Server .inf file (Tsoc.inf) changes the value to 0. This value is not changed if Terminal Server Services are not selected during the upgrade.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this problem, edit the registry value listed above to reflect the appropriate functionality, or use the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DontDisplayLastUserName

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
