PPT2000: Modified Code May Be Deleted When Resaving Presentation as HTML (226691)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft PowerPoint 2000
This article was previously published under Q226691 SYMPTOMS
If you modify the Extensible Markup Language (XML) or Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) files that are created when you use the Save as Web Page command to save a presentation, the modifications may be altered or discarded if you open and resave the file using Microsoft PowerPoint.
CAUSE
When you open a Web page in PowerPoint, PowerPoint reinterprets the file (or group of files) that describe the Web page into the original PowerPoint binary file format. When you use the Save as Web Page command again, PowerPoint interprets the file once again into a group of HTML and XML files that describe the presentation.
Depending on what changes you make to the XML or HTML code, and where you make them, PowerPoint may discard, preserve, or change any manually edited code. PowerPoint completely rewrites certain portions of the Web page every time you use the Save as Web Page command. This behavior is by design, and there is no option within PowerPoint to circumvent it.
MORE INFORMATION
Microsoft Office programs use XML and complicated scripts to describe Web pages, and you can open these pages natively in the program that created them. This XML code is unique to the host program; other programs may misinterpret the code. Editing the XML or HTML code generated by Microsoft PowerPoint is not recommended or supported by Microsoft. Minor changes to this code can cause problems up to and including corruption and total loss of your HTML presentation.
