ACC2000: Cannot Use Access Client-Server Tools After Installation of Microsoft Data Engine (225989)

This article applies only to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) on a computer running Microsoft Access 2000, you are unable to use the following menu commands in a Microsoft Access project:
  • Database Security
  • Synchronize Now
  • Create Publication
  • Pull Subscription
  • Push Subscription
  • Subscription Properties
  • Publisher Properties
  • Resolve Conflicts
When you try to use any of these commands, you receive one or both of the following error messages:
1157 - (One of the library files needed to run this application cannot be found.)

-or-

Connection to application object failed. Ensure that no program modules have been deleted.

CAUSE

After you install the MSDE, you are not prompted to restart Windows, even though restarting Windows is required to complete the installation.

RESOLUTION

Restart your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

For the commands mentioned earlier to function correctly in an Access project, MSDE, Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Desktop Edition, Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Standard Edition, or Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Enterprise Edition must be installed on your computer.

After you install any of the SQL Server products on your computer, you are prompted to restart Windows. Restarting allows Microsoft Access to recognize the new components that you installed.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Install Microsoft Access 2000.
  2. Install the MSDE.
  3. Open Microsoft Access 2000, and in the Open existing file list, select Northwind SQL Project File.
  4. If prompted, install the back-end database.
  5. On the Tools menu, point to Security, and then click Database Security.
  6. Note the error message(s) returned.
