This article was previously published under Q225286

SYMPTOMS

After you create a user name that contains non-alphanumeric characters, the Setup Computer Wizard does not continue past the Computer Name dialog box and the following error message is displayed:
Computername is not a valid computer name. A valid name must:

1. Be at least one character, but no longer than 15.
2. Not have spaces.
3. Be standard alphanumeric characters.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because non-alphanumeric characters are not allowed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue:
  1. When you receive the error message generated by the incorrect user name, click OK.
  2. Type a computer name that only uses alphanumeric characters. Only the following characters can be used:
    • A-Z
    • a-z
    • 0-9

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5.

MORE INFORMATION

A user name can be created using non-alphanumeric characters. The Setup Computer Wizard automatically creates a machine account based on the previously typed user name. If the user name contains non-alphanumeric characters, Setup Computer Wizard attempts to create a computer name using non-alphanumeric characters, based on the information obtained from the user name entered.
