Script Error Viewing a Web Site That Uses Transition Filters (223331)

SYMPTOMS

When you view a Web site that uses transition filters, you may receive one of the following script error messages, and parts of the Web site may not work correctly:
  • 'filters(...)' is not an object
    Object required:'filter name.filters(...)'
NOTE: The filter name may vary from site to site.

CAUSE

This problem can occur after you uninstall Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 from Windows 98. This removes the following registry key that is needed for transition filters to work properly:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CSSFilters

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem:
  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type regsvr32 mmefxe.ocx in the Open box.
  2. Click OK, and then click OK when you receive the "DllRegisterServer in mmefxe.ocx succeeded" message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2.
