Media Player May Cause an Access Violation During Authentication (222521)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 5.2
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 6.0

This article was previously published under Q222521

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Windows Media Player may cause an Access Violation error during authentication when you hit a secure URL using http:// instead of https://.

CAUSE

While the Windows Media Player has its authentication dialog displayed, the Web server unexpectedly sends more data down the same TCP connection. The data is sent through a custom ISAPI filter. This data cause the Windows Media Player to free up memory used for the authentication data structures that the dialog box updates. Therefore, as soon as the dialog box ends, the computer stops responding.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, configure the Web server to not send the data when the client is the Windows Media Player. Implementing this workaround requires custom code in an Isapi filter.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
