SYMPTOMS

You are using either WinFax Pro version 9.x, or Symantec Fax Starter Edition with Outlook and encounter either of the problems described in the "More Information" section.

NOTE: Some Sony VAIO computers ship with WinFax Basic Edition pre-installed, This is similar to Symantec Starter Edition. The WinFax Basic Edition, installed by Sony, appears as WinFax Pro in the Install/Uninstall tab of Add/Remove Programs. It appears as WinFax Basic Edition on the Programs menu. This may cause confusion as it may appear that three different versions of WinFax are installed if Outlook 2000 Internet Mail Only (IMO) is installed after the purchase of the computer. You will receive the looping message as mentioned in Problem II in this article. One of the fax products must be removed for faxing to operate correctly.

RESOLUTION

The problems in the "More Information" section have been identified by Symantec Corporation as problems with WinFax Pro. To correct these problems, contact Symantec Technical Support for WinFax Pro. Updates and more information on WinFax Pro can be found at the following Web site:

MORE INFORMATION

Problem I

You are using WinFax Pro 9.0 from Symantec, Corp. After initially installing Outlook without Symantec Fax Starter Edition, you elect to try the Starter Edition and remove Winfax Pro. When you click New Fax Message on the Actions menu, nothing happens. When you click Options, on the Tools menu, and then click the Fax tab, the WinFax Pro setup screen appears, but does not function. You also find that you are unable to remove and then reinstall the Starter Edition using the Office Microsoft 2000 Windows Installer.

Problem II

You are using WinFax Pro version 9.02 from Symantec, Corp. After installing Outlook, you click New Fax Message, on the Actions menu, and the Windows Installer seems to install the Symantec Fax Starter Edition. After restarting Outlook to complete the installation, you receive the following message:

Outlook has detected that you have WinFax Pro installed on your computer. Symantec Fax Starter Edition will now be replaced by integration with the full-featured WinFax Pro.

After you click OK, you click New Fax Message, and are continually prompted to install Symantec Fax Starter Edition.

To resolve this problem, Symantec has released a patch that detects the presence of either WinFax Pro or Symantec Fax Starter Edition, and gives the user the choice of which program to integrate with Outlook.
