This article was previously published under Q221082 For a Microsoft Excel 2002 version of this article, see 291084.
SYMPTOMS
When you open a workbook, you may receive the following message:
The workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in another workbook. Do you want to update this workbook with changes made to the other workbook?
To update all linked information, click Yes.
To keep the existing information, click No.
If you click Yes, you receive the following error message:
Excel cannot update one or more links in this workbook. To update the links, open all the link source files (Edit menu, Links command). To be sure all calculations are updated, press F9.
CAUSE
Microsoft Excel cannot update links from a workbook that is saved in the HTML file format if that workbook is closed.
Excel updates the links correctly if the link source file is already opened.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, open the HTML file to which the workbook is linked before you update links in the workbook.
