WD2000: Image Size Changes After Saving as HTML and RTF (220386)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q220386

SYMPTOMS

When you have a file that contains an image that you save as a Web page (HTML) and then save in Rich Text Format (RTF), the size of the image may change.

For example, if you insert a picture in a Word file that has the following measurements
   Size and Rotate

      Height: 2.74" Width: 2.99"

   Scale

      Height: 100% Width: 100%

and save the file as a Web Page (*.htm, *.html), and then save the file in Rich Text Format (*.rtf), the measurements of the image change to the following:
   Size and Rotate

      Height: 2.49" Width: 2.96"

   Scale

      Height: 91% Width: 99%

CAUSE

When you save your Word document as a Web Page (*.htm, *.html), Word converts the picture's original size in terms of its pixel size rather than its physical dimensions. Then, when you save the Web Page as Rich Text Format (*.rtf), the RTF converter of Word incorrectly calculates the pixel size back into the physical dimensions of the image.

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following methods to work around this problem.

Method 1: Change the Picture Wrapping Style

Before you first save your document, change the wrapping style of the picture. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click to select the picture.
  2. On the Format menu, click Picture.
  3. On the Layout tab, click to select the wrapping style that you want (other than In line with text), and click OK.
When you save your document as a Web page (on the File menu, click Save as Web Page), and then save your Web Page document as Rich Text Format (on the File menu, click Save As and change the Save as type box to Rich Text Format (*.rtf)), Word retains the original size of the picture.

Method 2: Save File as a Word Document

When you first save your document, save it in Microsoft Word format (on the File menu, click Save As and change the Save as type box to Word Document (*.doc)). Then use the Word document to save either as a Web Page (on the File menu, click Save as Web Page) or save as Rich Text Format (on the File menu, click Save As and then change the Save as type box to Rich Text Format (*.rtf)).
