FP2000: Cannot Open a New Page in a Multi-User Web (219568)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000

This article was previously published under Q219568

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft FrontPage 2000, a page in a multi-user web cannot be opened if the following events occur in the given sequence:
  1. User 1 opens a web.
  2. On a different computer, User 2 opens the same web.
  3. User 2 creates a new page called Newpage.htm in the root folder of the web.
  4. User 1 attempts to open Newpage.htm (by clicking Open on the File menu) and receives the following error message:
The file "Newpage.htm" is not found in the current Web.
NOTE: By clicking Refresh on the View menu, User 1 can open the new web.

CAUSE

The Open File dialog box lists a file that has been newly created, but the FrontPage explorer is not "aware" of the new file until it is refreshed.

This behavior occurs because the Open File dialog box continually checks the web for new pages, but the FrontPage explorer operates under the assumption that after a folder has been opened, the contents remain unchanged.

Before it opens a page, the explorer checks its own internal data structure to see if the page can be opened. Even when a new page exists, if the explorer does not yet have an indication that the page exists, it displays the error message described in the "Symptoms" section.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft FrontPage 2000.
