Desktop Icons Disappear After Installing Internet Explorer (218832)

SYMPTOMS

When you restart your computer after you install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1, only your desktop wallpaper and the text below each desktop icon may be displayed. The desktop icons may not be displayed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the IBM Aptiva Start Desktop Effects program starts automatically when you start Windows 95. The Start Desktop Effects program may not be completely compatible with Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact IBM Technical Support to inquire about the availability of a resolution for this issue.

To work around this issue, remove the Aptiva Start Desktop Effects shortcut from the Startup folder:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar Properties.
  2. On the Start Menu Programs tab, click Remove, double-click Startup, click Start Desktop Effects, click Remove, click Close, and then click OK.
