How to Manually Remove the Winsock Proxy Client (218482)

SUMMARY

The best way to remove the Winsock Proxy (WSP) client is to use the uninstall program that is included with the client. This article describes how to remove the client manually if the uninstall program does not uninstall the client correctly.

Windows 95/Windows 98 Clients

  1. Delete the Mpcsetup.log file in the root folder of drive C.
  2. Delete the Mspclnt folder and its subfolders.
  3. Delete the Windows\Winsock.dll file, and then rename the Windows\_msrws16.dll file to winsock.dll.
  4. If the file Windows\System\_msrws32.dll exists, delete the file, Windows\System\Wsock32.dll, and then rename Windows\System\_msrws32.dll to wsock32.dll.
  5. Delete the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    Uninstall\Microsoft Proxy Client

  6. Remove the C:\Windows\System\Wspcpl32.cpl file, which removes the WSP icon in Control Panel.
  7. Restart the client computer.

Windows NT Clients

  1. Remove the WSP client from Windows NT-based clients, use the steps in the "Windows 95/Windows 98" section, but skip steps 3, 4, and 6.
  2. Delete the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
    Uninstall\Microsoft Proxy Client

  3. Remove the %SystemRoot%\System32\Wspcpl32.cpl file, which removes the WSP icon in Control Panel.

Additional Information

The Winsock.dll file is replaced by the WSP client Setup program, depending on the Winsock file version and the operating system installed on the client. Additionally, the Wsock32.dll file may be replaced by Setup. If Winsock functionality does not work after using these steps, extract the Winsock.dll and Wsock32.dll files from the operating system's installed version of Winsock to the corresponding locations for the operating system.

For Windows 95/Windows 98:

Winsock.dll: Windows folder
Wsock32.dll: Windows\System folder

For Windows NT:

Winsock.dll: %SystemRoot%\System32 folder
Wsock32.dll: %SystemRoot%\System32 folder
