With Office 2000 Server Extensions, you have the ability to allow users to subscribe to folders and documents on your OSE Web Server. Your Notification Server is then used to send e-mail notification messagess to subscribers about changes made to the folders or documents to which they have subscribed.

To create a notification server, perform the following steps:
  1. Install the Office 2000 Server Extensions.

  2. Browse to HTTP://<ServerName>/msoffice/msoadmin/

    (where <ServerName> is the name of your Office Web Server).
  3. Click Configure Web Subscription Settings.
  4. Under Web Subscriptions, click the "On" radio button.
  5. In the Mail will be sent using section, type the name of your SMTP mail server.

    Note: The FQDN or IP Address entered here must point to an existing Exchange server or SMTP server (NOT an IIS SMTP server) on your LAN or WAN. If you are not certain what this FQDN or IP Address is, please consult your Mail Administrator.
  6. Type the e-mail account that your notifications will came from. This does NOT have to be a valid e-mail address.
  7. Type the e-mail address that users should reply to if they have a problem. This DOES have to be a valid e-mail address.
  8. In the Allow Web Subscriptions to section, click the appropriate radio button. You can allow subscriptions to folders and documents, or just documents.
  9. Configure the times to send document change notifications. These are done on three different levels.
    • Immediate Notifications - For subscribers who want to receive notifications immediately, you can set a delay if you like.
    • Daily Notifications - For subscribers who want to receive notifications once per day. Set the time of day the server will send notifications.
    • Weekly Notifications - For subscribers who want to receive notifications once per week. Set the day of the week and time of day the server will send notifications
  10. Click Submit.
The Office 2000 Extended Web Server is now configured to send e-mail notification messages to subscribers of folders and/or documents.
