OL2000: Automatic Dial-up Connection Hangs up on Completion of E-mail Check (218204)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q218204

SYMPTOMS

Your automatic dial-up connection to an Internet Mail account always hangs up after completing the transaction. This is true even if you have not chosen the option to disconnect after sending, receiving, and updating.

CAUSE

Background dialing always hangs up when the activity is completed. This behavior is by design.

RESOLUTION

For a dial-up connection to remain persistent you must manually initiate it.

If you want Outlook to dial an Internet service provider (ISP) and stay connected, you must configure Outlook to use a local area network (LAN) connection, and to dial the ISP if the LAN is not available. This causes Outlook to treat the dial-up connection as a LAN connection, and prevents Outlook from disconnecting. To set Outlook for the LAN dialing properties:

How to Set Outlook to Dial If the LAN Is Not Available

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  3. Click your Internet e-mail account in the list, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Connection tab, click Connect using my local area network (LAN), and then click Connect via modem if the LAN is not available.
  5. Click your ISP's connector from the list under Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection, click Apply, and then click OK.

How to Set Outlook to Stay Connected After Dialing

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. On the Mail Delivery tab, click to clear the Hang up when finished sending, receiving, or updating check box.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: The only method that guarantees that you will stay connected to the Internet is to dial in manually before you open Outlook.

MORE INFORMATION

The option to remain connected after completing a dial-up session is designed for manually initiated connections only. If you have a dial-up connection set to automatically dial in the background every few minutes, it always disconnects after the activity is completed.
